Fairly precarious forecast for an early June weekend is a drag. Reluctantly abandoning our original plans for Monte Alpi, our decision finally fell on Serra delle Ciavole, one of the easily accessible mountains of the Pollino massif. The best way to enjoy the fantastic view from its strung-out ridge is a full traverse (‘Traversata delle Ciavole’).
The starting point for this classical route is the high plain ‘Piano di Acquafredda’, in proximity of the mountain pass Passo delle Ciavole. From the foresummit (7181ft / 2130m) the ridge dips down towards the col, named Grande Porta del Pollino, which divides Serra delle Ciavole from Serretta della Porticella and Serra del Crispo. From the col it is possible to descend to the central Pollino high plains. With the clouds breaking and the sky clearing up, we decided to carry on in direction of ‘The Garden of the Gods’ and Serra del Crispo.
